January 24, 2010

I’m sure we can all remember those school holidays as kids when we would not have to get up early to go to school, playing in the garden, having sleep over’s and of course building amazing and sometimes wacky constructions with that favourite toy Lego! Well over the years, Lego has kept it’s popularity and is still one of the top selling toys of all time....

Just because most of us are all grown up now, doesn’t mean we can’t go back down memory lane a bit. Lego is still a major hobby to a lot of adults around the world, or also known as, Adult Fans Of Lego (AFOL for short). I actually belong to a Melbourne group who meet regularly to show off their Lego skills as well as swap, chat, and do all things Lego.

Even though Australia doesn’t have the masses as some other countries like the UK or USA, we still do have a large following of ‘The Lego Brick’. With groups in most of the major cities around Australia, AFOLs come together regularly and on one weekend of the year they come together on mass to the National Lego Convention, ‘Brickvention’, right here in Melbourne.

Brickvention is an Australian based convention for Lego fans that brings together Lego fans from all over Australia to view the latest Lego models to their own creations, or MOCs for short, (My Own Creation). The event is held over two days in January, in the city of Melbourne. This year the event will be held on the 23rd and 24th of January 2010.

The first of the days, Saturday the 23rd January, is devoted to AFOLs from around Australia and features activities involving all kinds of Lego. With speed building competitions to building small sets within the bag they come in, there is always amazing Lego prizes for the winners. There is usually a Lego Rep to talk about the latest in Lego and it gives all the AFOLs a chance to meet up and swap, chat and of course build.

The second of the days, Sunday the 24th January, is the public open day part of Brickvention where the general public including adults, kids, whole families, anyone who is interested really, to come along and view the many models and amazing creations by the AFOLs made out of Lego. With everything from a Lego train layout, to castles, and of course Star Wars sets, there is a theme for almost everyone who visits.

Lego fans are all welcome of any age on the Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Entry is only $5.00 for adults, $2.50 for kids, $15.00 for a family with two adults and up to four children. All proceeds go to making this event possible and help towards next years event, to make it bigger and better.

If you have loved Lego when you were a kid and would love to see the amazing creations, plus be part of this unforgettable event, why not join us on the Sunday and who knows, it might kindle that creative spark in you to get building and creating again!
